A Brief History |
On Tuesday afternoons at the Patcham Community Centre there used to be a strong solo
whist afternoon (about 15 tables) until they all stayed away when table money was
introduced (about 25p). I heard about bridge, called the number on the notice board
and spoke to Ken Ingate. There were usually 3-4 tables playing Chicago.
The numbers dropped and replacements were hard to find, so with help from Mavis Harris
we ‘persuaded’ a change to duplicate on the first Wednesday of the month, then first
and third Wednesdays, and so on. In the very early days Mavis tried to score, but none
of us knew how to do it until Terry Kelly at the Excelsior gave Mavis a copy of a computer
scoring program. We started to look like a real bridge club and numbers began steadily to
increase. (John Burton) In 2003 the move to the new Community Centre
with better facilities and space, the bridge club began to receive better recognition
which increased membership currently approximately 300, culminating in extra sessions with up to
20 tables. Recently being home to some of the County's equipment, duplimated hands/records
are now a regular format for Thursday evenings and alternating Wednesdays.

Doris Strauss:-
a founder member of the club and once again been asked to serve on your committee.
Since the previous time I have joined the Worthing Bridge Club and a member of
their committee and the S.C.C.B.A. For the last four years I have run the
Elisabeth North Trophy competition for Sussex. I direct on the third Wednesday of
the month, and Thursday evenings I enjoy playing the game of bridge. I am only
sorry that I didn’t take up playing the game until later in life. I should have
been brave and started when I moved here in 1964 and lived at the top of Third Avenue.

Roy Greenbaum:-
was born and brought up in Germany. At the age of 14 he came to England and settled in
Westcliff-on-sea, where he met his future wife Renée. He has a son and daughter and four
grandchildren. After 52 years of marriage his wife passed away in 1995. They had lived in
Sussex for 50 years, establishing an international antiques business. In 1981 they purchased
Ashcombe House Estate in Lewes from the University of Sussex, where he and his wife carried
on the business and indulged their passion for gardening. Roy now lives in a farmhouse in
Woodmancote with his partner Stella. He has been exhibiting for the last 25 years at major
London antique fairs. Roy and Renée were taught bridge by Bob Best and his partner Valerie
and Roy, after all these years, contends that he still doesn’t know how to play the game.

Jackie Hinden:-
spent the war years at a girls’ grammar school near Croydon, taking her exams
under the flying bombs. She worked as a secretary at the BBC, then spent the rest
of her working life in publishing, including a year in the USA. She taught creative
writing and bridge for many years for Brighton A.E. and has had short stories and
poems published. Her husband Jonathan is a musician and for 38 years they organised
a successful summer school for singers. They have one daughter, Frances, also a keen
